Pair Vintage Pewter Swan Master Salt Cellars Lidded Dishes 1740 Angel Mark FS:
$175.00

Up for sale is a gorgeous, matching pair of vintage cast pewter swan-shaped lidded vessels. Pertect as master salt cellars, elegant sugar/nut pots, trinket boxes, or statement accents for a traditional holiday tablescape.

Most likely from late 1800’s- early 1900’s. Maker’s mark inside bottom rim. See below for this information.

Design & Craftsmanship:

Each vessel is intricately detailed with textured wing relief and shaped into a graceful swimming swan perched on a sturdy pedestal base. The upper half of the swan body is hinged and opens smoothly to reveal the deep hollow interior compartment.

They feature a rich, authentic aged grey/bronze patina that beautifully accents the cast detailing.

Maker's Touchmark:

The bottom of each pedestal base features an indented traditional Continental European guild touchmark stamp. The stamp prominently displays Justitia / An Angel holding a balance scale, tanked by the master initials "F" and "S", with the historic workshop founding date of 1740 along the bottom rim.

Approximate Measurements:

• Height: 5 1/2 inches

• Width: 4 1/4 inches

• Combined Weight: 1.68 Ibs (Substantial, heavy-cast metal feel)

Historical Context & Traditional Use: Historically, elaborate figural vessels like these swans served as master salt cellars (or "salt dips") for fine European dining tables. Before modern free-flowing salt was

invented. salt clumped easilv and was kept

in communal lidded dishes. Because salt was a highly valuable commodity centuries ago, owning large, ornate master salts was a prominent status symbol of opulence and hospitality. Guests would open the hinged lid and use a tiny decorative spoon to scoop out salt for their meals. Today, they make versatile vanity boxes for jewelry, gourmet sugar pots, or striking mantel sculptures.

Both pieces are in very good vintage condition. The hinges function pertectly, and the lids close/are aligned. The metal features a few tiny, minor surface scratches consistent with handling and age.

Please look at all photos carefully.

Note on Craftsmanship / Bases:

True to their traditional hand-cast manufacturing process, the circular bottom rims of the pedestal bases are slightly asymmetrical/not perfectly round.

This minor variation is a typical characteristic of historic sand-cast or mold-poured pewter work rather than a defect, adding to their rustic, authentic old-world charm.

1. The "Pair Premium"

In the antique market, a matching set is worth significantly more than double the price of a single item. Because master salts were historically used in pairs or sets across a formal dinner table, collectors heavily favor matching pairs.

2. Size and Substantial Weight

Most common swan salt cellars are small individual place settings-typically measuring only 2 to 3 inches long and weighing just a couple of ounces. These swans are substantial

"master" cellars standing 5.5 inches tall and weighing a hefty 1.68 Ibs together.

Collector Demand for Hinges & Marks

The mechanisms and stamps drastically alter the value:

• Hinged Lids: Many standard pewter swan dishes are completely open bowls. Intact, smoothly operating hinged backs require precise mold work and are highly sought after.

• The 1740 Angel Stamp: The "Justitia" angel mark is highly recognizable to continental pewter collectors. Even as a late 19th-century reproduction, items bearing traditional foundry marks consistently outperform unmarked

"anonymous" vintage pewter.
