Original London & North Western Railway Crewe Works engineering drawing for the famous Claughton Class four-cylinder express passenger locomotive.
A very large and highly detailed original locomotive general arrangement drawing, measuring approximately 106 × 69 cm.
The printed heading reads:
“L&NWR – 6ft 6in Passenger Engine – 4 Cylinders – ‘Claughton Class’.”
The drawing records cylinders of approximately 15¾ inches diameter by 26 inches stroke, at a scale of ⅜ inch to one foot, and states that the first engine was built in January 1913.
It includes front and rear elevations and numerous sectional views, including sections through the inside cylinders, driving wheel and reversing shaft, together with extensive boiler, firebox, valve-gear and dimensional information.
The drawing bears an oval:
“Chief Mechanical Engineer’s Department – Drawing Office – L&NWR Crewe”
stamp, apparently dated 19/2/21, together with handwritten approval or checking marks.
It is accompanied by a later handwritten research sheet recording information said to have been obtained from the National Railway Museum. According to this note, the drawing was signed off by longstanding LNWR Chief Draughtsman J. N. Jackson and by LNWR Chief Mechanical Engineer and Claughton designer C. J. Bowen Cooke. The note also refers to entries in the Crewe Works drawing register from 1913 and 1915.
The Claughton Class comprised powerful four-cylinder 4-6-0 express passenger locomotives built at Crewe. None survived into preservation, giving original technical material relating to the class particular historical interest.
CONDITION
This drawing is more than a century old and is offered in distinctly distressed, workshop-used condition. It has been heavily folded and handled, with numerous creases, tears, staining, edge wear and substantial areas of loss around the margins. Some tears and losses extend into the drawn image. Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
Despite the damage, much of the principal engineering content survives and remains legible, including the title, Drawing Office stamp, main locomotive elevations, boiler sections and technical measurements.
The accompanying handwritten research sheet is in much cleaner condition.
An impressive and historically interesting original Crewe Works locomotive drawing, suitable for an LNWR collection, railway archive, museum display or specialist restoration and conservation project.
It measures 69cm x 106.
The drawing will be loosely rolled rather than tightly folded for dispatch, with appropriate protective packaging.
Please note: the attribution of the approval mark to C. J. Bowen Cooke is based upon the accompanying handwritten National Railway Museum research note and is not offered as a separately authenticated autograph.
