"True Water Has No Fragrance" (真水无香) — Original Manchu & Chinese Seal Script Composition by Yehenara Yulin
The purest water has no fragrance: true excellence needs no display. This four-character Eastern maxim — a quiet manifesto for understatement, inner virtue, and authenticity — is here transformed into a strikingly contemporary composition.
Instead of a conventional calligraphy layout, the artist arranges the characters wi

thin circular forms inspired by ancient Chinese Wadang — the decorated roof-tile ends of classical architecture. Manchu seal script fills the circles on the left, Chinese seal script on the right: two historic writing systems in visual dialogue, rendered in the artist's own synthesis. Even among the handful of living hands that write Manchu, almost none write it in seal-script style — this is calligraphy at its rarest, composed like modern art.
Every stroke is brushed by hand in traditional ink on authentic handmade xuan paper. This is not a print, reproduction, digital artwork, or AI-generated image. The piece photographed is the exact original you will receive — no duplicate will ever be created.

About the Artist
Yehenara Yulin is one of the last practicing masters of Manchu calligraphy — the script of China's Qing emperors, mastered today by fewer than a hundred people worldwide — and one of the very few living artists who can also write Jurchen, its medieval ancestor. A fifth-generation descendant of Empress Dowager Cixi's natal Yehenara clan, he is a member of the China Calligraphers Association and a guest professor at Tsinghua University's Academy of Arts & Design. His works have set personal sale records in China, are held in the permanent collection of the China Painting and Calligraphy Academy, have been broadcast on CCTV, and have been exhibited in Macau. He has also led the official translation and preservation of Manchu and Jurchen texts for heritage sites across China. Every piece is brushed, signed, and sealed by the artist personally, and ships direct from his studio in Houston, Texas.
About Xuan Paper — Please Read Before Purchasing
This work is created on authentic handmade xuan paper. Unlike machine-made paper, it naturally shows visible fibers, soft wrinkles, slight creases, and gentle waves — inherent characteristics of the material, not defects. Traditional wet-mounting (装裱) or framing renders the surface smooth. By purchasing, you acknowledge these natural paper characteristics.
