Original private period photograph connected with the HMS Devonshire turret disaster of July 1929.
The reverse is handwritten in pencil “HMS London Funeral” and the photograph is printed on genuine Velox photographic paper, with the manufacturer’s mark visible on the back.
It is a proper glossy darkroom photograph rather than a modern reproduction or commercially printed postcard.
The image shows Royal Navy personnel, clergy and uniformed officials gathered around an open grave at Volos, Greece, following the catastrophic explosion in HMS Devonshire’s X turret on 26 July 1929.
The principal funeral for those killed took place at Volos on 27 July 1929, with a further burial on 29 July. HMS London was present with the Mediterranean Fleet, which explains the contemporary handwritten identification on the reverse.
An unusual and very evocative original naval photograph from a documented Royal Navy disaster, apparently taken or retained privately by somebody associated with HMS London.
Condition: Original period photograph with age-related wear/marks as shown. Pencil annotation and Velox paper marking remain visible on the reverse.
Please study all photographs as they form part of the description.
Not a reproduction.
