BRAND NEW FedEx Vintage & Retired Bravo Zulu Enamel Pin & Certificate

The FedEx Bravo Zulu Award (known as a BZ), is a cornerstone of the FedEx Culture and Employee Recognition for outstanding performance. The story behind this unique token of appreciation bridges military tradition and a commitment to employee value:

1. The Military Origin

The term \"Bravo Zulu\" (often abbreviated as BZ) is an international naval signal meaning \"Well Done\" or \"Good Job.\" It originates from the Allied Naval Signal Book adopted after NATO was formed in 1949. In maritime communication, combining the nautical signal flags for the letters \"B\" (Bravo) and \"Z\" (Zulu) serves as a high compliment for outstanding performance, a successful mission, or actions that go completely above and beyond.

2. The Connection to FedEx

The naval tradition was brought into the corporate culture by the lateFedEx founder Frederick W. Smith, who served as a decorated U.S. Marine Corps officer.Frederick W. Smith(August 11, 1944 – June 21, 2025) was an American business magnate and investor. He was the founder and chairman ofFedEx Corporation, the world\'s largest express transportation company. Mr Smith is consideredone of the most successful transportation entrepreneurs in the world, with an estimated net worthof $5.3 billion at the time of his death according to Forbes. He adapted the phrase Bravo Zulu (BZ) to create a fast, impactful corporate reward system aligned with the company’s \"People-Service-Profit\" (PSP) philosophy.

3. The Design of the Pin

The rectangular pin features a gold-toned metal border, a white enamel face, the FedEx logo, and colored maritime signal flags.

The graphic on the pin features the literal geometric designs of the two naval signal flags:

  • Bravo Flag (Top): A red, swallow-tailed flag representing the letter \"B\".
  • Zulu Flag (Bottom): A checkerboard design divided into quarters of black, yellow, blue, and red, representing the letter \"Z\".
