A Campfire Oven on a Grand Scale

Picture a bed of glowing coals, this massive cast iron oven standing above them on its three rounded legs. Lift the bail, settle the pot into place, and lay more coals across the broad, rimmed lid. With heat coming from above and below, supper can roast—or a generous pan of biscuits can bake—out in the open air.

This is a vintage No. 14 shallow camp Dutch oven, attributed to Lodge and likely dating to the 1950s. At approximately 14 1/8 inches across and 18 pounds with its lid, it has the presence of a serious camp cooking vessel. The wide, shallow form gives you room to spread out a substantial meal while the raised lip keeps coals on the lid and away from the food when you lift it.

The Matching Lid Matters

Both the oven and its coal lid carry the incised “14” size mark. Finding a large vintage camp oven with its properly numbered lid is a pleasure: the two pieces belong together visually and give this set the complete look collectors want. The lid has a sturdy cast grip, and the pot retains its wire bail and all three integral legs.

The shallow No. 14 is a particularly appealing size for collectors of American cast iron. Its broad cooking area, matching lid, and substantial weight make it as impressive on display as it is around a fire. This is the sort of piece that draws a crowd before anyone has even asked what’s for approximately 14 1/8"

  • Height without lid: approximately 5 1/2"

  • Interior depth: approximately 3 3/4"

  • Weight with lid: approximately 18 pot, matching numbered lid, and wire bail

  • No cracks, chips, breaks, or repairs

  • All three legs intact

  • Bail wire has a bend at the top; please see photos

  • Attractive age and use to the cast iron surfaces

  • Unmarked with a maker’s name; the Lodge attribution and circa-1950s date are based on the form and markings. Please examine the photographs for the finish and full condition.

A commanding piece of vintage camp cookware, ready for its next place by the fire.
