MARTHA STEWART WILSON (1758-1852) was married to ROBERT WILSON, a young Irishman who, after being educated and trained for mercantile life emigrated to America and amassed a large fortune. He was one of the volunteers who accompanied General GEORGE WASHINGTON from Philadelphia to the camp at Cambridge [MA] following the Battle of Lexington. During 1777, he became Commissary of General Purchases. He died in 1779. But his Martha observed and had knowledge of important movements of the Revolution. She often entertained major military friends, such as generals Gates, Maxwell, Ethan Allen and she was on terms of friendship with Washingotn. In 1775, when he was preparing to join the army at Cambridge, Washington visited her at different times. His approach to Mrs. Wilson along with his staff was announced in time to have dinner with he.
