This is a Fine, Fancy, Top-of-the-Line Early Joseph RodgersAntique Gentleman's Dress Dagger Self-Defense Weapon with a Carved 3 dimensionalsculptured oxbone hilt in multiple rows of a rope pattern, fancy German silverembossed ferrule pattern en suite with the hilt, German Silver oval shapedcross guard, 4 blade flats dagger blade with 2 sharpened edges, with theoriginal heavy duty hand stitched leather sheath with early fancy scallopedGerman silver mounts circa 1830's.
During most of the 19th century there was little law and order,and it was "every man for himself". Men everywhere were constantly atrisk of being waylaid by thugs, ner' do goods, thieves, robbers and bandits.Fancy Dagger & Dirk knives were favored by Gentlemen of Means, MilitaryOfficers, Sporting Gents and affluent Gamblers in the saloons, bar rooms andgambling halls during the early to late 19th Century. Both fixed blade daggersand folding dirks were carried as a primary or back up weapon for self-protectionand also carried during the mid to late 19th Century after carrying firearmswas outlawed. Thus, Gentlemen would typically carry a fancy fixed blade daggeror dirk as a side knife on their belt that could perhaps avert a skirmish orconfrontation just by being displayed; other times, they would be hidden forconcealment and used as a weapon only when needed for self-protection. Thispiece falls into the romantic category of knives that were intended only as aweapon for actual self-defense; and thus, hold a special appeal for knifecollectors & historians, as well as weapon aficionados.
Almost all Dirk / Dagger Self-Defense Weapons that were carriedin America at this time were made in Sheffield, the knife capitol of the worldfor centuries. This piece has numerous features found only on early daggersdating to this period. Overall length in the sheath is 10". The Dagger is9 1/8" long with a 4 7/8" long double-edged blade. Although this pieceis lightweight, it is a deadly weapon. This diamond cross section dagger shapedblade has a median ridge from the top to the tiny ricasso. This blade grind is earlyand requires the Maker's mark to be hot stamped on the blade flat. Daggers with2 sharpened edges found on Self Defense knives were created for stabbing andslashing during a knife fight or melee, i.e., the owner could administer acutting blow in either direction, vs. a single edged dirk blade. This Dagger ismarked "Trademark (asterisk) and Maltese Cross (granted in 1682)"JOSEPH RODGERS & SONS", a mark that originated in 1812. The blade isunsharpened, with the original sharpened edge. Unlike modern machine-madeknives that seem perfect; antique 1800's knives show age and have history andromance. The blade has almost all of the original, painstakingly applied crocusof Iron bright final mirror polish, and only a couple of surface spots andlight pitting to the tip are noticeable with the human eye. As is expected,there are a few areas of scattered discoloration and one small light stain spoton the blade front. The blade has almost all of the original, bright crocus ofIron polish, and is in remarkable condition for being around 185 - 195 yearsold. The dagger blade has no nicks to the blade edge when running your fingerdown the edge of the blade with a full shape and has a small patch of distinctiveblood pitting on both sides of the blade tip. The 3-dimensional swell pommel 3dimensionally sculptured hiltis madefrom a single piece of Oxbone material, with a dark yellow and golden naturalaged coloration and from absorption of oils in the hand from handling. It has amultiple entwined rope pattern that tapers from the pommel end to the ferrule,with a flat ended oval shaped end pommel. All natural material shrinks overtime, and one almost always expects to see natural age cracks to large, one-piecehilts. This piece has a thin, naturally occurring age crack on one side fromthe ferrule to about half the hilt which demonstrates genuine aging, doesn'tshow when displayed on the back side, and is not distracting to the overallpresentation of the dagger. The German Silver ferrule below the cross guard isembossed in a rope pattern, en suite with the hilt and light patina. The crossguard is oval shaped German Silver, with an extremely slight forward bend toone quillon. The hilt, ferrule and cross guard are all tight.
The original early style handmade form fitted German silvermounted leather sheath fits like a glove. The sheath was custom made to orderand is correct for this period of the dagger. This hand made all leathersheaths costs much more than the typical Sheffield leather veneer over cardboardsheaths that were typical, very delicate, and mostly designed just to get theknife out of the showroom. It has a fancy German silver early style tip and a fancyscalloped and line engraved throat with a top lip. The leather was double handstitched in the front with a belt loop affixed on the rear of the throat. The strapis original and affixed with a stud and stitched to the sheath. The stitchingthreads are delicate and the bottom of this strap's stitching became unattachedand has been nicely reaffixed and appears as original. However, the strapshould remain flat and not attempt to actually use the belt loop. There is an indentationthat looks like a crease across the sheath back non-display side, but is on thesurface, and the sheath remains solid. Remember, this dagger is old as dirt;and typically lived a long hard life before an 1840's or 1850's dagger was evenmanufactured; thus, an 1830's dagger is many times rarer; especially in thisunsharpened condition. The German silver mounts are in excellent condition witha fine, even, light patina overall with only an extremely shallow, almostinvisible line indentation to the front throat that can be seen when turningint the light. The original hand made all leather sheath adds significant valueto a piece, as does the fancy mounts and 3 dimensionally sculptured hilt. Thisfine, fancy 3-dimensionally sculpted oxbone hilt, crocus of Iron polisheddagger blade, fancy German silver sheathed Dagger has ALL the whistles &bells. This is a handsome, high-quality piece by a Marquis Maker that has beenlightly carried; testament to it being well cared for 185 – 195 years and"put up". Condition wise, this is fine to near mint overall; and onehas to take its extreme age and resulting natural aging when evaluatingcondition. You will see more than 100 daggers of this very early period beforeyou will find one in unsharpened condition that collectors rarely see. Notethat it is impossible to photograph a curved shiny blade with 4 slanted panels,especially in compromised lighting conditions. The blade is reflecting blue skythat shows reflection of cloudsthatappear fuzzy, and not the Signature Sheffield shiny mirror crocus of Ironpolish.
