MARLENE DIETRICH : IN FILM \"DISHONORED\" : PARAMOUNT : ROSS VERLAG : RPPC 1931:
$35.00

This striking real photo postcard, published by Ross Verlag and numbered 5964/1, features the iconic actress Marlene Dietrich in a still from the 1931 Paramount film Dishonored. In this evocative image, Dietrich leans against an ornately carved wooden cabinet, dressed in a peasant-style blouse with elaborate embroidery and a layered ruffled skirt. Around her neck hangs a long pendant necklace, adding to her magnetic presence. Her expression is cool, distant, and inscrutable—perfectly capturing the spirit of the character she portrayed in Dishonored. The film, directed by Josef von Sternberg, is a wartime espionage drama in which Dietrich plays Agent X-27, a Viennese prostitute turned spy for the Austrian government during World War I. Her character, courageous and emotionally complex, seduces enemy officers to extract intelligence—until her loyalty is tested by love. The film explores themes of sacrifice, identity, and patriotism, and is widely regarded as a quintessential Dietrich–von Sternberg collaboration, known for its moody cinematography and stylized direction.Marlene Dietrich was born in1901, in Berlin-Schöneberg, Germany, and died on May 6, 1992, in Paris, France, at the age of 90. She rose to international fame in 1930 with her role as Lola Lola in The Blue Angel (Der blaue Engel), also directed by von Sternberg, which led to a Hollywood contract with Paramount Pictures. Her signature androgynous style, sultry voice, and commanding screen presence made her a defining figure of 1930s cinema. She appeared in such classic films as Morocco (1930), Shanghai Express (1932), and Destry Rides Again (1939). Off-screen, Dietrich was celebrated for her fierce independence and political convictions. She became an American citizen in 1939 and was a vocal opponent of the Nazi regime, performing tirelessly for Allied troops during World War II, for which she received the Medal of Freedom from the U.S. and the Legion of Honor from France. Though Dietrich was married once, to Rudolf Sieber in 1923, the couple separated early and remained married in name only. Dietrich was known for her numerous love affairs with both men and women, including Jean Gabin, Erich Maria Remarque, and possibly Edith Piaf, reflecting her complex and unapologetically unconventional personal life. The reverse of the postcard provides further intrigue. It was postmarked in 1932, in Riga, Latvia, and features a green 12 santīmi Latvian stamp from the 1928 agricultural series, showing a sheaf of wheat. The message, written in Latvian pencil script, offers “warm greetings before the journey”. This vintage postcard is in very good condition (see scans).
