Three letters to Herbert Hazeltine in Mansfield, Minnesota from his mother in Jamestown, NY with news from home. Three envelopes with brown 2cent stamps also included.
Some Excerpts:
June '84, My dear Boy, I received your letter... ...if they do not pay you any thing there I would not stay you can get work here and pay for a too I think you had better come home this fall any way. I do not think the West is the place for any one who has not got some money to start with you know you can come home any time you want to.
Mr. Lukens' Barn Burned up with every thing in it. A nice bull and seven calves and ella's new carriage .... they were gone to church, they thought a man stopped there to smoke and threw down his match the wind blew very hard at the time....
April '84, My Dear Herbert, (the mother talks alot about blackening brushes and polishing) ...You must not forget to read your Bible every day and go to Jesus with all your troubles and he will help you... your mother.
May '84, My Dear Boy, ... I have rented one of my rooms to a lady she pays me 50 cents a week. It will help pay the rent. Uncle Augustus folks talk of coming back to Jamestown to live but do not know for certain.... ... Grandma is not very well. She talks aout you a great deal. She says she tihinks you have staid long enough and says I must write to you to come home.
