Camp Nelson, near Lexington Kentucky was the location of General Burnside's HQ in 1863. An Original Camp Nelson Field Order issued at HQ Army of the Ohio, Camp Nelson, Kentucky, Aug 14, 1863 by General Burnside ordering his command to treat citizens of Kentucky with respect and Prisoners of War, especially the wounded are to be properly cared for. Today the site is a National Heritage Park. The Order is 1p, 8 x 5" ptd, with 2 perforate slits in left margin and age spots, reverse is blank, with small archival repair, overall VG.
General & Special Orders were issued tocommunicate commands and information to the Army. Each order, issued in writingby a command, was then printed for distribution to each unit, either at an armydepartment headquarter or by commanders at local headquarters, sometimes in thefield on portable printing presses. The orders were then issued to regiments,often to be read aloud to the troops.
General Orders were printed as issued withdate & location; at the end of a year the regimental adjutant mightretain them loose or simply string bind them by punching holes and stringing on¼” red cloth string tape (the source of the old expression "government redtape"). Sometimes an officer or HQ clerk might take a group of orders to alocal print shop or bookbinder and have an accumulation bound with leather orcloth covers.
Usually, American Military Orders of the 19thcentury including Civil War era were printed on an 8 x 5” sheet of quality ragpaper.
