This postcard features six translucent human faces superimposed onto the bark of the Inspiration Tree at Camp Chesterfield, with a grassy clearing and a small structure visible in the background.Camp Chesterfield was founded in 1886 by the Indiana Association of Spiritualists, with permanent grounds established along the White River in 1890. Initially operating as a summer tent camp for mediumship and seances, the site eventually expanded into a centralized district containing 65 structures, including hotels, saance cabins, and the Cathedral of the Woods.Spirit photography and portraiture were commonly utilized by Spiritualists at the camp to validate claims of mediumship and physical manifestations. Camp Chesterfield\'s history of these practices was punctuated by frequent investigations; in 1925, fourteen camp mediums were arrested on fraud charges, and a 1960 infrared film exposa further documented deceptive saance tactics.Despite these controversies, the grounds remain an active Midwestern Spiritualist center today. The campus was designated as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 to preserve its unique architectural and religious history.- Publisher: The Albertype Co., Brooklyn, N.
