Huge Antique Bug Hatpin 1890 - 1910. One of the first hatpins I purchased, when I started collecting several decades ago. It\'s pretty huge for a bug hatpin, the finial appears to be gilded base metal rather than brass (a good weight though), and it probably would have been made more for dramatic effect (and adding fun to your hat!) than impressing anyone with your wealth! However, it\'s lasted over 100 years, is pretty rare and looks great on display.
The head of the pin is huge, as you can see from the pics with ruler measurements, and the stem itself is over 12 inches long.....reflecting the impressive size hats often were eventually, before being replaced by the much smaller cloche hats of the 1920s.The gilt is a little worn and could be easily restored, but I have kept it as I found it. The lovely rich purple glass stone is in great condition and the steel shaft is still sharp.
Time for it to go to a new home. All reasonable offers considered.
