Southern California\'s desert regions—primarily the Colorado Desert (part of the Sonoran Desert in the southeast) and the Mojave Desert (in the northeast)—have a rich history of pottery production dating back over 1,500 years. This pottery was crafted by Native American peoples, including the Cahuilla, Kumeyaay (Diegueño), Luiseño, Cupeño, Serrano, Chemehuevi, and Yuman groups (such as the Cocopah and Quechan). Unlike the more decorated ceramics of the Southwest (e.g., Ancestral Puebloan pottery), desert California pottery is predominantly utilitarian: plain wares used for cooking, storage, and water transport in arid environments. These artifacts provide key insights into prehistoric trade, mobility, and cultural adaptations to desert life.
