Up for sale is a truly remarkable and highly unique specimen of high-quality Burlington Chert, discovered in the archaeologically rich region of Hamburg, Illinois, along the Mississippi River valley. This area is famous for its dense prehistoric occupation, spanning from Paleo-Indian times through the Woodland and Mississippian periods.
This large, heavy stone features an incredible natural shape that strongly resembles an Ice Age mammoth or mastodon, complete with a natural circular fossil impression (IMG_6963.jpg, IMG_6951.jpg) perfectly positioned where an eye would be. The right side of the piece showcases a fascinating, highly textured porous weathering pattern (IMG_6962.jpg).
Archaeological & Geological Context:
While the stone’s animal-like silhouette is a striking example of natural pareidolia or weathering, the piece itself is a massive chert cobble showing distinct, ancient fracture planes (IMG_6957.jpg, IMG_6953.jpg).
