HEAVY BASE STRAIGHT SIDE COCA-COLA NATCHEZMISS. c.1900-1915 HAND TOOLED
An Exceptionally Crude Early Coca-Cola withMassive Glass Base
Some antique bottles are valuable because they are rare.Others are memorable because they beautifully showcase how they were made.
This outstanding early straight-sided Coca-Cola bottlefrom Natchez, Mississippi falls squarely into the second category.
The first thing that catches your eye about this ice blue Coca-Cola bottle is the extraordinaryamount of glass gathered in the base. It is one of the heaviest glass slugsI have seen on a straight-sided Coke bottle and gives the bottle tremendouscharacter. It is a wonderful reminder that these bottles were individuallyhand-finished during the early days of Coca-Cola production.
Combined with its attractive ice blue color, crispembossing, and professionally restored crystal clarity, it makes for a terrificdisplay piece.
History of the Straight-Sided Coca-Cola Bottle
Before the famous hobble-skirt Coca-Cola bottle debuted in1915, bottlers throughout North America used what collectors now call the straight-sidedCoca-Cola bottle.
Each local bottling company ordered bottles embossed withits own city, making every community's bottle unique. Because many bottlersoperated only briefly or served relatively small markets, these early bottleshave become highly collectible pieces of Coca-Cola history.
This example is embossed:
COCA-COLA
BOTTLING CO.
NATCHEZ, MISS.
making it an authentic early Mississippi bottler.
About This Bottle
Based on the manufacturing characteristics—including the hand-tooledcrown-top finish, lack of machine-made markings, and overall construction—Ibelieve this bottle dates to approximately 1900–1915.
What truly sets this example apart is the remarkable amountof glass gathered into the base during manufacture. Rather than being perfectlyuniform like later machine-made bottles, this one displays the bold,hand-crafted character collectors enjoy seeing in early Coca-Cola bottles.
The embossing is crisp and stands outbeautifully against the crystal-clear glass.
The bottle has been professionally restored to removedecades of staining while preserving its original hand-made character.

Professional Restoration
This bottle has been professionally restored using mymulti-stage polishing process developed specifically for antique glass.
The restoration removed decades of staining and surfacewear while preserving the beautiful embossing, natural character, andmanufacturing features that make early hand-made bottles so desirable.
The glass is now exceptionally clean and crystal clear.
Condition
Overall, this bottle displays beautifully.
There are no cracks or repairs.
There is one noticeable chip on the top of thehand-tooled crown finish(PIC 6), measuring approximately 1/4 inch across andabout 1/8 inch deep. Because the chip follows the contour of the lip andthe glass is ice blue, it is actually less noticeable in personthan one might expect. I have attempted to photograph it as accurately aspossible.
Otherwise, the bottle presents extremely well withoutstanding embossing and beautiful clarity.
As with virtually all authentic antique bottles, there maybe tiny manufacturing imperfections, seed bubbles, and light age-relatedhandling marks consistent with its age.
