So who is Galileo?........Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) was an Italian polymath—often called the "father of modern science"—who revolutionized astronomy, physics, and the scientific method. By utilizing rigorous experimentation and the language of mathematics, he laid the foundational groundwork for classical mechanics and changed how humanity understands the universe.🔭 Key Contributions & DiscoveriesObservational Astronomy: Improved the telescope (magnifying up to 23 times) to become the first to study the cosmos systematically. He discovered the four largest moons of Jupiter, the phases of Venus, craters on the Moon, and sunspots.Heliocentrism: His observations of Venus (showing it had phases similar to the Moon) provided crucial proof that the planets orbit the Sun, backing the Copernican model rather than the traditional Earth-centered view.Physics & Motion: Established foundational rules for classical mechanics, including the law of falling bodies and the principle of circular inertia (an early precursor to Newton's First Law of Motion). The Scientific Method: Shifted the study of nature from qualitative philosophy to a mathematical, experimental discipline.⚖️ The Conflict with the ChurchGalileo’s public defense of the heliocentric (Sun-centered) model caused significant friction with the Catholic Church. In 1633, the Roman Inquisition found him guilty of heresy. He was forced to publicly recant his findings and was sentenced to house arrest for the remainder of his life. He continued his scientific writings until he lost his sight, passing away in Arcetri, Italy, in 1642.
