Major John Clowney commanded the 30th Wisconsin Volunteers sent by General Sibley to the Dakotas to build Fort Wadsworth, protecting the settlers from the Sioux during the Red Cloud War. Major Clowney vowed that he could \"resist all the Indians in the Northwest\". The fort was constructed of hewn logs, with 2 log blockhouses. An Original Civil War List of Stores issued to Major Clowney, 30th Regt Wis Inf, October 1863 at Camp Washburn listing a large assortment of building supplies, certifying the above items have been transferred to Major John Clowney as Commander at Camp Washburn (Milwaukee) by LTR W Hubbs. The Fort was renamed Fort Sisseton in 1876 and remained active until 1889. The 30th Wisconsin was composed of lumberrmen, miners and some Chippewa Indians. From 1862-1864 the 30th occupied various stations including Fort Wadsworth and Fort Union ( where one man was killed by the Indians). and other Dakota posts during General Alfred Sully\'s Expedition against the Lakota. By late 1864 many of the companies were sent to Louisville, Kentucky to engage with the guerrillas including the notorious \"Sue Munday\" gang, and participated in the execution of other guerillas.
