Vintage RPPC – Minick's Place, Top of Bald Knob Mt., near Bedford, Pa.
Real photo postcard of Minick's Place, a combination hotel, restaurant and filling station on U.S. Route 30 at the top of Bald Knob Mountain. The two-story frame building carries large painted HOTEL and RESTAURANT lettering wrapping the corner, OPEN ALL YEAR above the columned entrance porch, and SANDWICHES and MEALS painted on the storefront glass. A sign mounted on the roofline reads ELEV. 2906 HIGHEST POINT. Six people pose across the front of the building, three men standing on the drive and two women seated on the window ledge with a third standing beside them, and an automobile is parked at the far left. The service island runs down the right side of the image: a row of visible-register gas pumps under a wooden canopy, curbside porcelain signs for WATER and TYDOL, a Sunoco arrow sign mounted on the utility pole, a hanging ESSO STATION sign on a post at right, and an ESSOLENE sign on the brick station building. Stacked oil drums sit beneath the canopy and a small pyramid-roofed outbuilding stands behind the pumps. Bald Knob Summit at 2,906 feet is the highest point on the Lincoln Highway in Pennsylvania.
