💎 Description

In daylight, this heavy Sterling Hill specimen shows broad zones of pinkish-brown willemite alongside white calcite and dense clusters of lustrous black franklinite. The warm willemite tones and bold dark franklinite patches give it plenty of character before the lamp comes on.

Under shortwave, the specimen lights up in large, well-defined color fields: brilliant electric green willemite with a visible fibrous, radiating texture wraps much of the surface, while broad zones of vivid red-orange calcite run through the center, and the black franklinite clusters break it all up with sharp dark contrast. The big, bold color blocks make this a striking display face rather than a fine-grained mosaic. Under longwave the calcite shows as pink-red patches and the willemite settles into a softer green, giving the piece a more muted but still clearly defined two-color look.

⸻

🌍 Composition

• Willemite — Zn₂SiO₄ — pinkish-brown in daylight, brilliant electric green under SW UV, softer green under LW UV

• Calcite — CaCO₃ — vivid red-orange under SW UV, pink-red under LW UV

• Franklinite — ZnFe₂O₄ — non-fluorescent at both wavelengths, black clusters providing contrast

• Natural, untreated specimen from the Sterling Hill Mine, Ogdensburg, NJ
