Attractive Mid Size Vintage French Stoneware Brown Bottle - Perhaps for Calvados
This is an attractive mid sized French stoneware container/pitcher/jug/bottle.
We understand that this shape is most commonly associated with storing Calvados, although could also have been used for other spirits, or perhaps cider. It was almost certainly made in the Normandy region of France, as both the design and colouration of the container is very typical of the region.
The jug features a single handle for easy pouring, and a narrow neck that would have been fitted with a cork bung. The container has flattened sides that would have helped prevent rolling when in transit.
The jug would likely have been handmade (possibly in the 19th century), although we suspect that this one is a more modern version made during the middle part of the 20th century. It is stamped with a number 3, which likely signifies that the capacity is 3 Litres.
Despite originating from Normandy, we actually bought this in the South West of France in a little village called Taillant from a brocante/street market. It would make a lovely addition to any interior decor, either on the floor or on a cabinet as an interesting design piece.
As well as being an interesting piece of French history, it makes an ideal vase for artificial flowers.In one photo we have shown it next to a wine bottle, to help ascertain scale.
