Arcade Buffet Venice California Interior Chas Shaw Antique Postcard:
$20.00

Striking antiquecolor postcarddepicting the lavish interior of theArcade BuffetinVenice, California. This impressive view showcases a long, elegant dining and refreshment hall with patterned tile flooring, mirrored service counters, richly painted wall murals, and overhead trellises decorated with greenery and hanging lights—designed to evoke an upscale European arcade or winter garden.

The Arcade Buffet was operated byChas. Shaw & Co., whose name appears directly on the card. Establishments like this were central to Venice’s identity in the early 1900s, when the city—founded by Abbot Kinney—was promoted as a refined seaside resort combining culture, entertainment, dining, and spectacle. Buffets and cafés along the amusement district catered to visitors attending shows, strolling the arcades, or spending the day at the beach and piers.

This postcard likely dates to thecirca 1909–1915period, based on the divided back, printing style, and subject matter. The reverse listsGeo. Rice & Sons, Printers, Los Angeles, and includes period postal rate information for domestic and foreign mail. The card isunused, with no writing, stamp, or postmark present.

Condition:

Good to very good antique condition. Noticeable age toning, edge and corner wear, and light surface wear consistent with age. Color remains strong and the interior details are clear and visually striking. Please review scans carefully for full condition details.

Historical Context:

Venice was one of the most ambitious planned resort cities in early 20th-century America, inspired by European pleasure gardens and arcades. Interior postcards of restaurants and buffets are especially collectible, as these spaces were rarely photographed and often dramatically altered or lost. This image provides a rare glimpse into the sophistication and theatrical design that defined Venice’s Golden Age before later redevelopment.

A standout piece for collectors ofCalifornia postcards, Venice history, restaurant and buffet interiors, amusement-era memorabilia, or early Los Angeles tourism ephemera.

Carefully packed and shipped with protection.
