A striking vintage Madonna and Child polychrome relief plaque, likely dating to the early 20th century, circa 1910–1930. The deeply modeled figures of Mary and the Christ Child are finished in warm cream, red, brown, and gilt tones, with a large gold halo creating a strong devotional presence. The piece is set within a green-and-gold frame and measures approximately 27” x 22” overall.
Inspired by centuries of European Christian devotional art, this plaque has the look of Renaissance and medieval religious imagery interpreted through an early 20th-century decorative work. What makes it especially unique is the combination of large scale, dimensional relief, aged gilding, extensive craquelure, and beautifully worn polychrome surface. The visible wear, flaking, and losses are consistent with age and give the piece an authentic old-world character. No maker’s mark has been identified, so the material is best described conservatively as a painted composition/plaster-type relief with gilt accents. Please review all photos carefully for condition and surface details.
