An exceptional early-20th-century Hebrew–English siddur with an elaborate pearlescent celluloid binding, pierced metal ornament, Ten Commandments emblem and original decorative clasp. Published by the Hebrew Publishing Company of Brooklyn and copyrighted 1906, the volume retains Hebrew family inscriptions dated 1907, 1908 and 1910.
Included is its remarkable fitted dark velvet sleeve, hand embroidered with colorful flowers, Hebrew lettering, a Star of David and bird motif. A visually striking and deeply personal piece of American Jewish devotional and material Hebrew–English Jewish prayer book titled Complete Daily Prayers with a Revised Translation According to the Custom of Ashkenasim, published by the Hebrew Publishing Company, 122–128 Leonard Street, Brooklyn, New York. The copyright page records a date of 1906, while the earliest handwritten ownership entry appears to date from 1907.
The book is distinguished by its highly decorative pearlescent celluloid binding. Its architectural, shrine-like front cover incorporates pierced dark metalwork, gilt floral ornament, small bird motifs and a raised central representation of the Tablets of the Ten Commandments. The original ornamental metal clasp remains present.
The prayer book is accompanied by its fitted dark velvet textile sleeve. Both sides are richly hand embroidered with red, yellow, white and green floral decoration. One side bears Hebrew lettering surrounded by flowers; the reverse features a bird enclosed within a Star of David.
Hebrew and later English ownership inscriptions document the book’s continued family use across several generations. Visible dates include 1907, 1908, 1910 and July 2, 1954.
A particularly compelling example combining Jewish religious practice, ornamental bookbinding, family history and domestic needlework.

CONDITION
Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear consistent with devotional use and more than a century of preservation.
The decorative front binding remains striking and substantially intact. The plain pearlescent back cover shows surface rubbing, discoloration, scratches and general handling wear. The edges and binding exhibit wear, and the page block shows toning, staining and edge wear.
The original ornamental clasp is present. The interior contains numerous historic handwritten Hebrew and English ownership inscriptions. Some pages show creasing, folded corners, scattered marks, discoloration and other evidence of use. The volume appears substantially complete but has not been exhaustively collated page by page.
The velvet sleeve shows fading, surface wear, areas of pile loss, waviness and wear along the seams and edges. Its embroidered floral, Hebrew, Star of David and bird decoration remains vivid and highly decorative.
Please examine all photographs closely, as they form an essential part of the condition report.
COLLECTOR NOTES
The 1906 copyright and ownership entries beginning in 1907 strongly suggest that this copy dates to the first decade of the 20th century.
Its appeal extends beyond antiquarian-book collecting to collectors of Judaica, Jewish-American history, decorative bindings, religious material culture, historic needlework and objects retaining multigenerational family provenance.
The book and embroidered sleeve have remained together and are being offered as one complete ensemble.
