Antique Victorian crazy quilt, dating to approximately c.1884, beautifully hand pieced from a wide variety of period fabrics including silk, velvet, satin and other textiles. Features elaborate hand embroidery throughout with flowers, birds, stars and numerous decorative motifs.Of particular interest is a period textile incorporated into the quilt reading “BLAINE AND LOGAN,” associated with the 1884 presidential campaign of James G. Blaine and John A. Logan. This unusual political textile adds an interesting piece of American history to the quilt. The quilt displays the classic asymmetrical patchwork and decorative embroidery associated with late-19th-century Victorian crazy quilting. Rich jewel-tone colors include burgundy, red, navy, brown, gold, cream, green and purple.Condition: Antique condition with wear consistent with its considerable age. Various fabrics show areas of deterioration, fraying, splitting/shattering, discoloration and loss, particularly some of the delicate silk fabrics. Embroidery and stitching also show age-related wear in places. Please review all photographs carefully as they are an important part of the condition description. No attempt has been made to restore the quilt.Approximate size: 60” × 53”
