ThePumpkin That Started a Business
(CourtesyOf W.D. Burt Seed Co.) In the early 1890s, a Dalton New York, resident named WilliamD. Burtgrew a massive, prize-winning giant pumpkin by famously nourishingthe plant with hog manure and milk. Capitalizing on the local fame ofhis agricultural feat, Burt teamed up with his sister, Jenny, tolaunch BurtBrothersin 1894,selling seeds harvested from the pumpkin. The business quicklyoutgrew its humble beginnings and evolved into the W.D.Burt Seed Co. Burtexpanded the inventory far beyond pumpkins, importing seeds globallyto offer a vast variety of vegetables and flowers.
Thecompany operated through the first half of the 20th century. DuringWorldWar II,William’s son, Malcolm Burt, made the decision to dissolve thebusiness. Although the seed operations ceased and the historicfacilities were repurposed, the company's striking aesthetic left apermanent mark on American design history. In 2013,the UnitedStates Postal Service (USPS)honored the company's artistic legacy by featuring vintage W.D. Burtseed packet artwork on an official series of USPS stamps (See Photo # 5)
