Antique Whist Game Set — Complete with Lacquer Boxes, Tokens & Excelsior Card Deck
A wonderful and rare antique Whist game set, dating from around 1890–1910. This complete set would have graced the parlour table of a well-to-do household and is a charming piece of social history.
The outer box is made of wood with a decorative burr wood-effect finish to the edges and interior lid lining in cream fabric/paper. It features a brass lock escutcheon on the front and brass hinge fittings. The exterior shows honest age-related wear including scratches and paint loss to the top — fully expected for a piece of this age.
Inside you will find:
- 4 black lacquered wooden boxes, each topped with a gilt card suit emblem: ♠ Spade, ♥ Heart, ♣ Club, ♦ Diamond. These boxes contain bakelite scoring tokens, chips and small markers — the full complement for a game of Whist.
- A central compartment that holds a complete deck of playing cards in their original red Excelsior Speelkaarten box (Dutch, meaning \"Excelsior Playing Cards\"), labelled WHIST. The cards show normal use and age.
- Additional wooden inner trays/dividers for organisation of all the components.
Whist is the forerunner of Bridge and was enormously popular across Europe from the 18th century well into the early 20th century. Sets like this were produced to a high standard and are increasingly sought after by collectors of antique games and Victoriana.
A complete set in one box — hard to find in this condition with all components present.
Dimensions of outer box (approx.): 30 × 16 × 7 cm — please check photos carefully as they form part of the description.
