A 5.5x3.5" vintage RPPC photo postcard from the estate of a vintage automobile postcard collector. This was part of a huge collection of antique postcards.
Photo Overview
A striking real photo postcard capturing a young chauffeur or driver seated behind the wheel of an early open touring automobile, likely photographed in a garage or showroom setting. The driver wears the classic peaked motoring cap of the era and holds a cigar in his mouth as he grips the large wooden-rimmed steering wheel. The car itself is a large, high-quality touring vehicle of the early automotive period, featuring a distinctive rounded coal-scuttle style hood, tall brass or nickel acetylene headlamps, cowl-mounted side lamps, right-hand drive configuration, deeply tufted button leather upholstery, and large spoked wheels with pneumatic tires.
The body styling with its rounded hood and dashboard cowl points to a European luxury make of the 1905 to 1910 period, possibly a Renault or similar French or continental touring car of the type imported to the United States. Postmarked from Portland, Oregon on June 14, 1910, and addressed to Mr. J. H. Miller in Roseburg, Oregon, this card documents both the excitement of early motoring and the everyday correspondence of Pacific Northwest life during the dawn of the automobile age.
