My brother and sister-in-law ran an antique shop in central Indiana for over 40 years. When they retired they brought home drawers full of photos and ephemera thay had sat aside for more research.
That was the case with these 2 sepia photos printed on thinner paper than I usually see. They look like they have been ripped from an album, with uneven tear marks at the top. Pictured are 3 automobiles, with 4 people seated inside of each and then a group photo of the 12 people standing together. 6 3/4\" wide; 4 to 5\" tall.
The cars are from the early 1910s \"Brass Era\" touring cars.
The automobile on the left is likely a 1910-1912 Buick Model 19 or 21.
The center photo isan early Franklin Model G, a prominent Brass Era automobile manufactured by the H. H. Franklin Manufacturing Company of Syracuse, New York.Unlike the vast majority of cars from this era that required liquid-filled radiators, Franklins utilized an innovative air-cooled engine. This required a distinctive, barrel-shaped rounded front hood covered in custom louvers to draw in and circulate air directly over the cylinders.
On the right isa 1911 Pope-Hartford Model W Touring Car or very closely related model from that exact timeframe. It is also a Brass Era Touring Car
Second photo is an historical group photograph dating from the late Victorian to early Edwardian era, specifically around 1900 to 1910.
The photograph captures several notable details about the fashion, technology, and social customs of the turn of the 20th century:
Women\'s Fashion
- High-Necked Blouses: The women are wearing classic high, stiff lace collars (often called boned collars or chemisettes) that were standard formal daywear for women during this era.
- Elaborate Millinery: They are sporting highly stylized, large, and structured hats decorated with fabric flowers, ribbons, and velvet textures, which became increasingly prominent during the Edwardian period.
- Gibson Girl Hairstyles: Their hair is styled in the iconic \"Pompadour\" fashion—swept loosely upward and outward over padding to create a voluminous halo around the face.
👔 Men\'s Fashion
- Bowler Hat: The visible gentleman in the background wears a classic dark derby or bowler hat.
- Facial Hair: His prominent, thick mustache was highly fashionable for men of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
- Formal Attire: He is dressed in a dark wool suit jacket over a high-collared white shirt.
📸 Photographic Characteristics
- Sepia/Monochrome Tones: The image has the characteristic aged tint of early silver gelatin or cabinet card photography.
- Depth of Field: The background features soft, natural outdoor foliage, indicating the photo was likely taken at a social gathering, family reunion, or picnic outdoors using a camera with a relatively wide lens aperture.
