Measuring approximately 9\" long x 4\" wide, this substantial cast art-metal casket features elaborate high-relief decoration throughout. The front is centered by a beautifully modeled female face / lady mascaron, surrounded by large flowers, flowing foliage and scrolling ornament. The raised hinged lid continues the deeply sculpted floral design, and the casket rests on four ornate curved feet.
The underside is clearly marked JB 496, identifying the maker as Jennings Brothers of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Jennings Brothers was known for finely cast decorative art-metal wares, including jewelry caskets, and used JB marks accompanied by catalogue/model numbers.
The box retains a rich gold/gilt finish with attractive age-related patina. The underside of the lid is also decorated in dramatic raised relief. Interior retains an old dark lining.
Condition: Antique condition with expected wear from age and use. Gold/gilt finish shows rubbing, discoloration, spotting and areas of finish loss. Interior lining has considerable wear, staining, deterioration and losses. Wear is also present around the hinge and interior edges.
