The historical legacy of the Ancienne raffinerie de Chantenay (the old Chantenay sugar refinery) reflects the rise, golden era, and ultimate decline of the cane sugar industry in Nantes, France.

Origins and Conversion (1858–1866)

The site, located in the lower working-class district of Chantenay along the Loire River, originally began as something else entirely. In 1858, an industrialist named Charles Suffisant established an oil mill (huilerie) on a 4,900-square-meter plot of land. However, as Nantes grew deeply tied to global maritime commerce and transatlantic imports, industrialist Louis Cézard purchased the site and converted it into a cane sugar refinery in 1866. At its opening, it processed raw cane sugar shipped into the port, outputting roughly 15 tons of sugar per day.

Financial Struggles and Growth (1880–1914)

The refinery faced unstable financial periods due to shifting sugar markets:

• The 1881 Bankruptcy: In 1880, the business merged into Émile Étienne et Cézard, but it went bankrupt just a year later in 1881.

• The Souques Era: In 1886, Ernest Souques took over the assets to officially establish the Raffinerie de Chantenay. Under his management, the factory entered its most prosperous era.

• Peak Employment: By 1914, on the eve of World War I, the Chantenay refinery had expanded into a massive industrial employer, utilizing a workforce of 700 laborers to process imported sugarcane.

Consolidations, Strikes, and Closure (1967–1968)

In the mid-20th century, the factory faced intense competition from beet sugar production and domestic industrial consolidation.

• The Say Takeover: In 1967, the refinery was absorbed by the major French sugar company, Say (which later became the famous Béghin-Say brand).

• The 1968 Social Movement: In May 1968, the Chantenay refinery became a hotbed for the historic nationwide civil unrest and labor strikes paralyzing France. Workers occupied the factory demanding better conditions.

• Final Shutdown: The occupation was short-lived; the company permanently closed the factory in July 1968, and parts of the old industrial facility were subsequently demolished.
