I have had this box for many years and have done a-lot of research . I’ve never seen anything like it, so I’m listing it as a coin bank. It could be something totally different. Up for sale is an incredibly rare and highly unique antique Victorian brass mechanical puzzle bank / secret compartment safe box, dating from the late 19th century (circa 1880–1900).
This heavy, solid brass box features an exquisite high-relief repoussé panel of a mythical Satyr / Pan face on the front, flanked by ornate acanthus leaves and decorative rosette rivets. Both heavy cast-brass side handles feature matching hand-carved foundry pattern numbers ("A262"), proving individual artisan hand-fitting and assembly.
Excellent functioning antique condition with pristine structural alignment. The brass retains a brilliant, clean golden polish with beautiful structural rivets. There are mild scratches throughout. The Mechanical "Trick":
Designed as a security novelty, the top features a narrow depository slot equipped with an internal gravity-weighted baffle plate to prevent tampering or "fishing" items out. The bottom plate fits perfectly flush, masquerading as a sealed base. To access the hollow interior, the user must turn the box over and unscrew all four turned brass feet from the threaded structural corner rods, allowing the bottom panel to slide completely free.
