Antique French Country Wooden Wash Box / Knee Box (Carrosse) - Repurposed Shelf! 18.5" tall x 19.25" wide x 12.5" deep. The wash box shows expected surface wear, marks, and a gorgeous natural weathered wood patina consistent with age.
Dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, these solid wood boxes were used by washerwomen (lavandières) kneeling by rivers or public washhouses to keep their knees elevated and dry while scrubbing laundry. (Glad I have a washer and dryer!)
These boxes can now be repurposed as shelves. The box could be hung on a wall or can sit on a flat surface. It could work in any room - to hold towels in a bathroom, detergent in the laundry room, canisters in the kitchen, books in the den, crocks in any room. It would look fantastic filled with pumpkins and gourds!
