Antique F. J. Emery “Burmese” Aesthetic Movement Transferware Pitcher – Burslem, England – c. 1878–1894
Fine late Victorian earthenware pitcher by F. J. Emery of Burslem, Staffordshire, England, decorated in the firm\'s documented “Burmese” pattern. Dating to approximately 1878–1894, this is an attractive example of English Aesthetic Movement pottery incorporating the strong Japanese influence fashionable during the period.
The cream-colored earthenware body features dark transfer-printed flowering branches and birds above an elaborate geometric and floral lower border. Particularly attractive details include the irregular scalloped rim, bulbous body, transfer decoration extending inside the neck, and geometric decoration running along the handle.
The underside bears the printed factory mark: “EMERY / BURMESE / BURSLEM / ENGLAND.”
