The ornate handle features a detailed portrait of Commodore Dewey surrounded by decorative scrollwork. The bowl depicts the USS Olympia, Dewey’s flagship, and is inscribed:

BATTLE OF MANILA
MAY 1, 1898
The reverse is marked “STANDARD,” a mark found on other documented examples of this Spanish-American War commemorative spoon. Comparable Standard examples are generally identified as silverplate rather than sterling. Etsy
