Mudmen were produced primarily in the Shiwan (Shekwan) kilns of Guangdong province in southern China. Production of this style for export became especially popular from the late Qing dynasty through the Republic period and into the mid-20th century (roughly late 19th century to the 1950s–60s, with later reproductions continuing).

They were handmade (or mold-assisted with hand finishing), often showing fingerprints or tool marks in the clay. The colorful lead-based glazes (yellow, green, blue, turquoise, aubergine, etc.) are characteristic. Note condition in photos. Tapestry background not included. Thanks for shopping with us!
