This antique ashtray is a classic example of Art Deco \"Pierrot\" tobacciana, likely dating from the 1920s to the early 1930s.The figure represents Pierrot, the melancholic \"sad clown\" from the Commedia dell\'arte, which became an iconic motif during the Art Deco era.
Most likely European (specifically French or Austrian) or American. While many ceramic versions were mass-produced in Japan and Czechoslovakia, high-quality bronze or spelter versions like this one frequently produced in France (where the Pierrot cult was strongest) or by American firms like the Armor Bronze Company or Nuart. It appears to be cast bronze or spelter (a zinc alloy) with a bronze-toned patina. The weight and the \"cold-painted\" or darkened finish in the crevices are typical for the metalwork of that period.
The felt bottom is original or an early addition to prevent the heavy metal from scratching furniture. It is common for these pieces to be \"unsigned\" or to have the maker\'s mark hidden under the felt.
Circa 1925–1935. The ruffled collar (\"fraise\"), the stylized buttons, and the overall pose are hallmarks of the Art Deco period. During this time, smoking accessories were treated as art pieces for the home.Measures approximately 5 inches high and 6 inches in diameter. Does have some wear, as my pictures show. Please view all my pictures for the best. Check out my other listings for more cool vintage items. I list new items weekly.
