Antique 1895 C L Voorhees Somerville New Jersey NJ Blob Top Blobtop Beer MINT:
$159.00

Step back into late Victorian Somerville, New Jersey, when steam trains served the county seat and local bottlers supplied a growing community. This handsome C. L. Voorhees blob-top beer bottle, circa 1890–1900, is a beautifully preserved piece of that everyday history.

Standing 9 1/8 inches tall, it features strong embossed lettering surrounding an elaborate Victorian monogram. The bright, clean, shiny glass makes the ornamental design especially striking—a lasting advertisement molded directly into the bottle.

A published historical account identifies Charles L. Voorhees as a business partner of Somerville bottler William H. Cawley beginning around 1892. Cawley’s business reportedly distributed Ballantine beer, providing an interesting connection to New Jersey’s brewing history, although the original contents of this particular bottle are unconfirmed.

The lettering sits within a slug plate, an interchangeable section of the mold that allowed a glassworks to personalize bottles for individual businesses. The rounded blob top is characteristic of nineteenth-century beer and soda bottles. The glass manufacturer is unidentified.

Somerville was changing rapidly during this period. Its population grew from about 3,861 in 1890 to 4,843 in 1900 as rail connections supported local commerce. Somerset Hospital was incorporated in 1899 and opened in 1901 with twelve beds. In 1909, Somerville became an independent borough, and its present historic county courthouse was completed.

Exceptional condition is this bottle’s strongest attraction. Unlike heavily handled examples, it retains brilliant glass, crisp embossing, and no case wear.

  • Height: 9 1/8 inches.
  • Strong embossing and attractive central monogram.
  • Bright, clean, shiny glass.
  • No chips, cracks, haze, or case wear.
  • One tiny, flea-sized scuff mark on the back.
  • Otherwise attic mint, apart from that minute rear scuff.

A striking example for collectors of antique beer bottles, New Jersey advertising glass, and Somerville history.
