Antique 1863/1866 Civil War History Book Set — First Editions, 2 Volumes
Antique 1863/1866 Civil War History Book Set — First Editions, 2 Volumes
A genuinely scarce find for Civil War collectors and historians: John S. C. Abbott’s The History of the Civil War in America, Volume I (1863, Ledyard Bill) and Volume II (1866, Gurdon Bill) — both First Editions, published while the war itself was still recent history. Richly illustrated with steel-engraved portraits (including Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside) and fold-out battle maps including a detailed map of the Gettysburg battlefield. A period pencil ownership signature inside reads “James Black, Jenkintown, Montgomery Co., Pa.”
Please note the honest condition: these books show significant wear consistent with their 160+ years of age — detached/separating spines with visible binding structure, heavy foxing and staining throughout, and cracked hinges. Text blocks and illustration plates remain intact and legible. These would benefit from professional rebinding/conservation, or make a great “as-found” piece for a collector who wants to restore them. Priced accordingly for honest, well-documented condition.
Sold as is. Please see pics for condition. Message w questions.
