Original Victorian-era American photograph album, circa 1860s, with deep red embossed leather binding, decorative metal clasps and thick gilt-edged pages designed with oval and arched openings for inserted photographs.
Album contains 29 period photographs:
12 tintypes
17 CDV / carte-de-visite type paper photographs
Also included is one cabinet card photograph of a heavily bearded gentleman by Geyger, Des Moines, Iowa, which was found with the album.
The photographs depict an assortment of unidentified men, women, children and babies in period dress. A particularly interesting intact group of early American vernacular photography.

As found. The album shows substantial but attractive age and use, including rubbing and losses to the leather covering, particularly at edges, corners and spine; surface wear; foxing and spotting to interior pages; binding wear/separation in areas; and age-related wear to the metal hardware. Some empty photograph openings show remnants or evidence of previously removed photographs. Individual photographs vary in condition and may have fading, spotting, scratches, oxidation and other age-related wear. No cleaning, restoration or repairs attempted. Please review listing photographs carefully for overall condition.
