ANTIQUE C. 1894 N.Y.C.C.Co. PLAYING CARDS, BOX, TAX STAMP, COHEN, HART, LEVY:
$268.90

ANTIQUE deck of Playing Cards C.1894, Made by The New York Consolidated Card Co. which was formed in 1871 with the merger of Lawrence & Cohen, Samuel Hart & Co. and John J. Levy. ...the box has a 2 cent Ultramarine/Blue RF2 stamp with \' Act of Aug. 1894 \'.
...Congress passed The Tariff Act of 1894 also known as The Wilson Bill. Private Companies were also permitted, at their own expense, to produce their own stamps. These private die stamps featured the names of the companies as part of their designs... the stamps were overprinted with the initials of the manufacturer ... N.Y.C.C.Co. This design was used around 1894-1895. Cards such as these were made with the \' Pebble \' back design in earlier years, stamps were not placed on the cards until they left the factory. In 1894 Grover Cleveland was President and there were 44 States ... some not included in The Union at that time were Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. Poker Playing Cards were still used often in the \' Old West \'. This deck was made with the Hart design on the Ace of Spades but did not use his name. Some cards without his name could be sold at a discounted price or noted as \' seconds \'. Also the company did issue advertisements for cards with readable backs that some dealers used. Variations in the card back designs could help \' read \' the cards. The Mfg. would not want their name on those cards. Condition : cards are in excellent condition with no creases and no tears, and very clean. Unused or lightly played condition. The Box shows obvious wear from handling, top flap is detached. ...
