A single Kwakwaka\'wakw canoe under a squared sail, three figures aboard, moving across open water toward a distant shore. Curtis made it in 1914 on the British Columbia coast.It is one of the quietest images he ever made. No ceremony, no regalia, no posed subject — just a boat on flat water in late light, the ripple of the surface carrying most of the picture. The canoe sits low and long, the sail patched and slack, and the whole thing reads as a moment rather than a document.Curtis wrote of these people: \"Men, women, and children almost lived in canoes, and possessed most remarkable skill in navigating stormy waters in their frail craft.\"The Kwakwaka\'wakw — known to the wider world as the Kwakiutl — were the subject of Curtis\'s most intensive fieldwork on the Northwest Coast. Volume 10 is among his most celebrated.
This an Edward Curtis original Copper Photogravure Llate from *The North American Indian.* These copper plates are considered the last vision of the artist. This plate is unique and singular. It measures 9\" x 7\".Acquired in 1982 by the Curtis Collection, in which I am a Partner, as part of the largest private acquisition of Curtis plates ever made. Forty-four years later it is part of my private collection — and I have decided to offer it here. Recently, due to the ages of the partners, each Partner has taken their own private collection.
