Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Holy Unmercenaries and
Wonderworkers Saints Cosmas and
Damian (Святые и Дамиан). The main figures are
Saints Cosmas and Damian, early Christian martyrs and physicians who healed the sick for free. The Old Church Slavonic inscriptions clearly
label them as Стыи безсреб.
Даміанъ (Holy Unmercenary
Damian) and Стыи безсреб.
Кузьма (Holy Unmercenary
Cosmas). The bottom of the panel features small icons of two additional saints lying in graves or coffins. The upper middle section features an image of Christ, God the Father, or a specific variant of the Mandylion over a church dome. handwritten provenance on the back provides an exceptional historical paper trail: "Purchased in Russia by George Pasanis [or Pasanjus] 1884.
Brought from Greece 1973 by his granddaughter Mary Economos and given to her son Andrew."Based on the painting style, typical wooden panel build, and this script, the icon dates to the mid-to-late 19th century (c. 1850-1880).
