Denny's began in 1953 as Danny's Donuts, a doughnut shop that Harold Butler and Richard Jezak opened in the newly incorporated Los Angeles suburb of Lakewood, California, and kept open 24 hours a day to feed shift workers from the nearby Douglas Aircraft plant. As later stores added grills and full coffee-shop menus, the existing Coffee Dan's chain objected to the similar name, and with a vowel shift Danny's became Denny's, a 20-restaurant chain by 1959. It grew into the largest coffee-shop chain in the country before being acquired by TW Services in 1987.
