Original Los Angeles Times – San Fernando Valley Edition
Monday Morning, August 6, 1962
Historic Los Angeles newspaper reporting the death of Marilyn Monroe, with the dramatic banner headline:
“MARILYN MONROE DIES; PILLS BLAMED”
This is an especially desirable regional edition of the Los Angeles Times, published immediately following Monroe’s death at her Brentwood home.
The front page features a large photograph of Monroe and contemporary reporting stating that the actress had been found dead in her Brentwood residence.
Unlike examples consisting primarily of the front section or front page, this copy retains 16 pages total and includes extensive additional Marilyn Monroe coverage and photographs inside.
Highlights include:
- Large front-page “MARILYN MONROE DIES; PILLS BLAMED” headline
- Prominent front-page portrait of Marilyn Monroe
- San Fernando Valley Edition
- Dated August 6, 1962
- Follow-up article: “Help She Needed to Find Self Eluded Marilyn All Her Life”
- Special Marilyn photographic section marked A and B
- Photographs from The Misfits with Clark Gable and other points in Monroe’s career
- Photographs and coverage of her marriages, public appearances and personal life
- Coverage of her Brentwood home and circumstances surrounding her death
- Contemporary report of public reaction at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre
- Additional period news, advertising and Los Angeles-area content throughout
Size: approximately 22 1/2” x 14 3/4” per full newspaper page.
This is an authentic period newspaper, not a reproduction or commemorative reprint.
The Los Angeles provenance makes this particularly appealing for a Marilyn Monroe collection: Monroe was born in Los Angeles, became one of Hollywood’s defining stars, and died at her Brentwood home only hours before this edition was prepared.
