Original 1955–1960 Western Travel Photograph Album — 69 Photos & Original Negatives

An exceptionally interesting original mid-century Western American travel photograph archive, containing 69 black-and-white photographs, including six loose prints, preserved in a substantial 11 × 14-inch vintage photograph album with numerous surviving original film negatives.

The collection documents American Western travel during the 1950s and around 1960, with photographs showing historic towns, Western movie sets, vintage automobiles, casino and commercial signage, roadside attractions, famous landmarks, mountain chairlifts, and giant sequoia trees.

Unlike an ordinary family scrapbook, this album features an unusually high concentration of identifiable historic locations and visually compelling documentary scenes. Many photographs retain handwritten dates and locations.

Old Tucson, Arizona — 1960

A particularly desirable group documents Old Tucson, the historic Western movie-set complex built outside Tucson, Arizona.

Photographs include:

  • Valley National Bank Western-style storefront, bearing the humorous sign “Largest Bank in the Eight Rocky Mountain States.”

  • Red Dog Palace and Western Opera façades.

  • Rustic wooden and adobe-style buildings.

  • Frontier storefronts, boardwalks, and streets.

  • Visitors posed beside Western set architecture.

  • A period Justice of the Peace / Law West of the Pecos-style building.

  • Additional Western structures and architectural details.

The Old Tucson photographs have considerable crossover appeal for collectors of Western movies, historic film studios, Old West attractions, Arizona history, and American vernacular photography.

No specific film production or actor is attributed to the photographs.

Virginia City, Nevada — 1955

A strong series documents the historic Nevada mining town of Virginia City.

Highlights include:

  • The original Bucket of Blood Saloon, with a large painted Budweiser advertising sign and period automobile.

  • An additional Old Bloody Bucket storefront streetscape.

  • A Virginia City Museum / Film / Curios sidewalk scene.

  • Vintage automobiles, storefronts, pedestrians, and commercial buildings.

These photographs document Virginia City as it appeared in the mid-1950s and will be of particular interest to collectors of Nevada mining-town history, Virginia City, historic taverns, automotive history, and Western Americana.

Nogales, Mexico — 1955

An attractive documentary series captures Nogales, Mexico, including:

  • La Princesa S.A. Curios storefront.

  • Commercial buildings and curio shops.

  • Period automobiles, buses, and street traffic.

  • RCA Victor and other commercial signage.

  • Pedestrians, sidewalks, and downtown streetscapes.

The images preserve excellent examples of mid-century border-town commerce and Mexican-American tourism.

Reno, Nevada — 1960

An original photograph identified as Main Street Reno, 1960, shows a busy downtown street with automobiles, pedestrians, and numerous large commercial signs.

The dense period signage and downtown composition make this one of the album\'s especially appealing examples of mid-century Nevada urban photography.

Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah — 1955

The archive includes several views of the famous Bonneville Salt Flats, including an especially interesting photograph of a large roadside sign reading:

“Bonneville Salt Flats — This Is the World\'s Fastest Racing Course”

The sign includes references to prominent speed-record holders John Cobb and Ab Jenkins, giving the photograph particular interest for collectors of land-speed racing, motorsports history, Utah history, and historic automobile culture.

Other photographs show travelers standing on the immense salt flats against distant mountain scenery.

Mount Rose, Nevada — 1955

Several original photographs document an early Mount Rose mountain chairlift and recreational area, including:

  • Chairlift towers and suspended chairs.

  • Riders traveling on the lift.

  • Mountain landscapes and elevated views.

  • Visitors and period recreational structures.

A fascinating record of 1950s mountain tourism, chairlift engineering, and Western ski-area history.

Sequoia and California Travel

Numerous photographs capture giant sequoia trees, historic forest roads, vintage automobiles, visitors, and spectacular California forest scenery.

Several compositions show immense tree trunks alongside people and automobiles, providing a dramatic sense of scale.

Additional views include fallen or hollowed trees, forest roads, and mid-century visitors exploring the landscape.

Tucson and Southern Arizona

The collection also includes original photographs of:

  • Saguaro cacti and desert landscapes.

  • Vintage automobiles beside desert scenery.

  • Travelers posed among cacti.

  • Desert roads, mountains, and roadside stops.

  • Period Arizona travel scenes dating to the 1950s.

Tuzigoot National Monument, Arizona — 1960

Several original photographs document the stone ruins of Tuzigoot National Monument, near Clarkdale, Arizona.

The views show historic masonry structures, archaeological remains, and visitors, providing an appealing record of Southwestern heritage tourism.

Additional Western Travel

Other subjects include Jerome, Arizona; mountain scenery; roadways; scenic overlooks; travelers; historic structures; and assorted mid-century Western landscapes.

The combination of identifiable locations, handwritten captions, people, automobiles, and period commercial details makes the collection particularly appealing as a record of 1950s Western American road travel.

Original Negatives Preserved in the Album

A particularly important feature of this collection is the survival of numerous original photographic film negatives.

Many negatives remain tucked behind photographs mounted in period photo corners.

Several pages retain original handwritten red labels reading:

“NEGATIVES UNDER PICTURES”

The photographs and negatives have been left in their original arrangement rather than separated into individual lots.

The exact number of surviving negatives has not been individually established. Not every photograph has been verified as having a corresponding negative, but upon my inspection almost every photo did have it\'s corresponding negative.

Physical Album Details

The album measures approximately 11 × 14 inches closed.

Its brown textured cover features a distinctive mid-century starburst design, embossed “PHOTOGRAPHS” lettering, and original cord-style binding. A small paper label on the cover reads “Tucson.”

The collection includes 69 original photographs, six of them loose, with most prints measuring approximately 3.5 × 5.75 inches and many featuring decorative scalloped edges.

Original handwritten place names, dates, and photographic mounting corners remain preserved.

Sold as one complete vintage album with the surviving negatives included.

A compelling original archive for collectors of Old Tucson, Western film history, Virginia City, Nevada, Reno, Nogales, Bonneville Salt Flats, early ski lifts, historic automobiles, roadside Americana, and mid-century documentary photography.
