Agua Caliente took its name from the hot mineral water rising along the east side of Sonoma Creek. By the 1880s, M.K. Cady\'s resort hotel was pulling San Francisco crowds by rail to soak in its 112-degree springs and swim in a massive mineral-water pool. When fire destroyed the main building in 1915, the hotel was rebuilt in stone, and that is the building seen here.
Zan Stark shot it from the front lawn in high summer. Ivy has nearly swallowed the ground floor, leaving the arched stone entry as a dark notch beneath the hipped tile roof. A line of cars sits nose-in along the rock border, a prewar coupe parked beside a postwar Mercury, and a fringed umbrella shades a table under a towering palm at the right.
The card went out on December 31, 1951, the final day of the Agua Caliente post office after 65 years of service. Mail shifted to neighboring Fetters Hot Springs the next morning. The stone hotel still stands on Vailetti Drive, designated Sonoma County Landmark 21.
