Original circa 1948/1949 presidential pinback button. The button has the wording: "Our 33rd President of the U.S.A. Harry S. Truman Country Independence, Missouri". We do not know whether the button was issued for Truman's presidential campaign in 1948 or issued for his inauguration in 1949 (or both). In any event, this is a very important discovery of such an extremely rare Truman pinback button!!!
We know of several examples in collections of the rare "Eddie's Friend" & the "60 Million People Working" Truman buttons. Certainly, advanced collectors are well aware of what those two types of rare Truman buttons have sold for. But, we have only seen one other example of the "Independence, Missouri" Truman button that we are offering in this listing. In searches through many years of the political buttons offered by Anderson, Heritage, & Hake sales we could not find a single example of this button offered for sale. This button is an impressive size & has a diameter of 2 1/4 inches. In over 57 years of being involved in old political buttons we have only seen one other example of this button!!!! This button recently turned up fresh out of a Lancaster County, Pa. estate. The button had delightful company as it turned up with a wonderful & large 2 1/4 inch TR-Fairbanks jugate (currently listed on ), a very rare suffrage pin (sold on ), a number of FDR buttons (sold on ), & various other Truman buttons (sold on ). As this is the most exciting & the rarest Truman button that we have ever owned we decided to save it until last before listing it.There is no maker's mark on the button. We do not know whether the button originally had a back paper insert or not as a back paper is not present. The only other example that we know of also does not have a back paper. The button has a number of light brown age stains here & there. The stains show up as being significantly darker in the pictures in our listing than they appear in person. The back retains the original pin.The back metal as well as the collet (rim) have a considerable amount of gray patina oxidation from age. But, a good bit of the original silver sheen still remains interspersed with the gray oxidation on the back metal insert. There is a small old spot of adhesive residue on the back of the metal which has turned quite hard with age. This could probably be removed, if desired. But, we have chosen to leave the button as found. This button would certainly be an amazing addition to even the most advanced Truman collection!!! Please examine the photos closely & purchase based on your own judgement as to condition & value. This item is inventory #7739.
