Original December 1944 Orange County Telephone Directory, issued by the Southern California Telephone Company during World War II.
A terrific snapshot of Orange County when communities including Santa Ana, Anaheim, Fullerton, Orange, Garden Grove, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Placentia, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano and surrounding areas looked dramatically different from today.
In addition to residential and business telephone listings, the directory contains a wealth of wonderful 1940s local advertising for restaurants, cocktail lounges, doctors, health treatments, appliance dealers, water companies and other Orange County businesses.
Particularly interesting are the numerous WWII home-front references. Telephone-company advertising discusses shortages of materials, military production and troop movements, while a Maytag repair advertisement features a “Buy War Bonds” graphic.
Other wonderfully period advertising includes colonic irrigation and drugless health treatments, Eaton & Horrocks dining and dancing in Silverado Canyon, Waldai’s cocktails in Santa Ana, Town House, Bastanchury Water Co., washing-machine repair businesses and much more.

Condition: Heavily used original condition with substantial staining and discoloration to the covers, toning throughout, edge and corner wear, creasing, small tears and other age/handling wear.
