Wonderful photograph from June, 1944, showing an American army technical sergeant preparing for the WWII D-Day invasion of Europe, just days prior. The handwritten caption reads "Clean for D-DAY" Ludlow, England June 1944". The soldier is washing or cleaning equipment by a riverbank next to a field-expedient stove (constructed from a metal tin over a wood fire) used for heating water or rations. He is wearing an M1 helmet and a U.S. Army M1943 field jacket (or similar coat) worn by troops prior to deployment. A wonderful glimpse into a seldom seen aspect of preparation for this famous and world-changing event!
The visible portion of the photo measures 7"x9" and the frame is about 10"x12".
